Cary-Grove finishes quad with positive result against Lakes

It's been a learning experience, especially the past week, for Cary-Grove's boys soccer team.

The Trojans got a pair of goals from Esteban Angeles and another from Michael Arenberg to help carry them past Lakes 3-2 in the final game of the Carmel quad in Mundelein on Saturday morning.

C-G (6-3-2) won two of its three games in the tourney, as it also defeated South Elgin and lost to Carmel. But because of the Trojans' loss to the host school, Carmel (10-4, 2-1) won its own quad.

Cary-Grove's victory over Lakes snapped a two-game losing streak that included a disappointing 1-0 defeat to McHenry in Fox Valley Valley Division action Wednesday.

"Any win is a good win," Cary-Grove coach Mark Olson said. "We just have to play smarter and understand the game situation. We've got to understand what the strength of our team is and what isn't.

"We're a young team, experience-wise, and an old team as far as grade-wise," he added. "We just have to do a better job. I hope it's a learning experience. If you don't learn something from every game, then you're missing the boat. I'm still happy with the effort."

Angeles scored an impressive goal that broke a 1-1 tie in the 49th minute. When his teammate John O'Brien slotted a ball through the defense, Angeles was left one-on-one with the keeper and placed a shot inside the near post.

"I had a wide-open space," Angeles said. "It really wasn't just me. We had people pulling the defenders. I was just calling for the ball. It was slotted right into me by John. It was communication right there. I was left to decide which side of the goal I wanted to go."

Arenberg scored four minutes later, hitting in a volley that was set up with a Patrick Kingdon header back from the end line.

Lakes (4-8-1, 1-2) got a goal back to get within 3-2 in the 75th minute. Luke Fahey found the back of the net with a volley inside the back post.

The Eagles had a couple of other chances in the final couple of minutes.

"I thought we held up really well," Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. "We're getting better at staying focused in the game for greater stretches. (Cary-Grove) has a great player in (Angeles). He was able to break through and make a good play. To our credit, we didn't stop playing and we had our chances. We've got to stop the little things that gives up goals. We just have to get ourselves more mentally focused."

Lakes' other goal was on a header from Sean O'Brien that was off Foster Dore's corner kick early in the second half.

Angeles scored on a header 17 minutes into the game, as Riley Conroy earned the assist.
