Seniors throw surprise birthday party for Elgin police chief
Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda was greeted by a standing ovation and serenaded Thursday with "Happy Birthday" by more than 150 seniors as he entered the Greater Elgin Senior Center.
Swoboda, who thought he was going to give one of his regular talks to the group, was totally caught off guard and delighted with the surprise. He went around the room and greeted every person with a handshake or hug, a smile never leaving his face. A few members of the police force were in attendance for the luncheon as well as Swoboda's wife, Laura.
"I'm completely in shock. I had no idea. ... To be walking in and having people sing 'Happy Birthday' was quite a shock. And then all the pictures, balloons, family that's here and all the officers. ... I'm in awe and I'm just very touched," said Swoboda, whose birthday is Saturday.
Photos of Swoboda and seniors from the center with special birthday wishes hung by streamers from the ceiling. Nearby a table was filled with photos and gifts to the chief including a fake TV Guide cover with his picture on it, signed by seniors. The partygoers were also treated to a tap dancing performance by the Dancing Queens of Elgin, comprised of seniors from the center.
Activity Director Minne Vasquez said, "We did the surprise for Chief Swoboda because he's been a good supporter to Senior Services. He's been so helpful with my seniors. Seniors love him. We're so thankful to have him as part of our lives ... and we just want him to know how much we appreciate him."
