Library's Literacy Coordinator Receives Award from Department of Homeland Security

In appreciation for her tenacious work in initiating and hosting U.S. Naturalization Ceremonies at the Schaumburg Township District Library (STDL), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and The U.S. Department of Homeland Security presented a plaque to STDL Literacy Coordinator Patricia Barch on Friday, Sept. 18. The plaque presentation culminated the library's seventh Naturalization Ceremony since the first one in 2011. For Barch, the event marked her last official involvement with Naturalization Ceremonies, as she will retire this December. Barch said she will continue to attend the ceremonies after retirement.

The ceremony began with Presentation of Colors by the Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates American Legion Post 1983, followed by welcome speeches by the USCIS Branch Chief, Library Board President Ruth Jonen and President Barack Obama (via video). With right hands raised, 73 citizenship candidates from approximately 30 countries took the U.S. Naturalization Oath in a room bedecked with patriotic decorations and filled with supportive family and friends. Moments later, they recited the Pledge of Allegiance for the first time. Following the ceremony, new U.S. citizens took photos, posing with their certificates in front of the American flags. Many of them also gathered for snacks and beverages at a library reception in their honor.

Citizenship preparation classes, which meet twice weekly for twelve weeks, take place twice a year beginning in March and September. Interested persons should check the library's Program Guide for details, or go to the website at schaumburglibrary.org.
