South Elgin savors victory over Lakes
The wait is over for South Elgin's boys soccer team.
The Storm picked up its first victory of the season Thursday by capturing a 2-1 decision over Lakes in the Carmel quad in Mundelein.
Jimmy Kelleher and Isaac Perez scored for South Elgin (1-4, 1-2).
"It's good to get the first win," Storm coach Collin Hayes said. "Our team played its best game of the year. Our possession was great and our communication was great."
Lakes (4-7-1, 1-1) started the scoring early. Zack Espinosa hit a corner kick that Foster Dore finished with a header for a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
South Elgin stormed back in the 23rd minute. Kelleher chested a ball into the back of the net off a Ricky Valdivia cross. Perez scored the game-winner off a low cross in the 60th minute.
"We're a team of fighters," Hayes said. "We really didn't have a doubt that we were going to get goals and come back."
"(South Elgin) was a good team," Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. "They held the ball really well. They were tough physically. I think in some ways we had chances at various times in the game when our forwards were in good situations.
"We've got to play a style that we can be a little more successful at and not out-possess a team," Kullby added. "We're going to have to out-hustle and outwork teams. But I still thought we did a pretty good job."
