3 Elgin-area schools to stay closed today after Legionella bacteria found

Three Elgin-area school buildings will remain closed today after high levels of the bacteria that can cause Legionnaires' disease were found in schools' cooling systems. Eastview Middle School in Bartlett, Larkin High School in Elgin and the Educational Services Center, which holds the central office and Gifford Street High School programs, were evacuated yesterday morning. Plank Road crash victim identified

A Rochelle woman was killed in a fiery two-vehicle crash in Plato Township yesterday afternoon, police said. A semitrailer truck was heading west on Plank Road just west of Switzer Road near Hampshire when a white Yukon SUV heading east on Plank Road crossed the centerline, Kane County Chief Deputy Thomas Bumgarner said. Two Barrington deaths called murder-suicide

A Barrington father and daughter are dead in what coroner's officials said yesterday was a murder-suicide. Barrington police and the Cook County Major Case Assistance Team responded about 4 p.m. Tuesday to the home at a house on the 500 block of North Avenue, where a man and woman were found dead. Prospect Heights District 23 teachers still on strike

Students will be out of the classroom for a sixth day today as the Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 teacher strike continues. "At this time there is no tentative contract," union President Bob Miller said last night. "PHEA continued with negotiations throughout the day and into the early evening." Full story.

Arlington Heights lifesaver honored posthumously

An Arlington Heights woman who drowned while saving the life of a boy has been honored with a Carnegie award. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission honored Karen Wessel yesterday with a medal for heroism, ABC 7 reported. Full story.

Casciaro released from prison

A former Fox Lake resident who had been serving a 26-year prison sentence for murder is now a free man, ABC 7 reported last night. Mario Casciaro, 31, walked out of the downstate Menard Correctional Center yesterday afternoon. Full story.

Former Bear Desmond Clark leads protest march in Vernon Hills

Former Chicago Bears tight end Desmond Clark and his wife led a peaceful march to Vernon Hills High School yesterday, nearly a month after a racially charged confrontation there led to their arrests. The Clarks and about 35 supporters gathered at the Vernon Hills police station and then walked about a mile to the school, where their son is a student. Full story.
