WWII pilot to speak at Honor Flight fundraiser

Byron Kinney, a World War II pilot who flew rescue missions over Japan to save American POWs, will be the featured speaker Saturday at a

fundraising event for Lake County Honor Flight.

The event will take place beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, at the Midwest Care Center Atrium, 2050 Claire Court in Glenview. The cost to attend is $25 if purchased in advance online, or $30 at the door. All proceeds will benefit Lake County Honor Flight's trip number 5.

Kinney was a B-29 pilot who delivered lifesaving food and supplies to POWs in Japan. Among the POWs was Louis Zamperini, whose story was made famous by the book, and later movie, "Unbroken."

"Our organization, as well as our community, will have the opportunity to meet an amazing individual. He is a true image of our country's history," said Lake County Honor Flight Director Paula Carballido.

Kinney will be traveling with Lake County Honor flight on their Oct. 10-11 trip.
