Dydo delivers as Lakes edges Carmel in OT

Lakes' Nick Dydo has had a knack for scoring goals this season.

On Tuesday night, he notched his seventh of the season - which was lucky in more than one way, as it turned out to be a golden goal for the Eagles' boys soccer team.

Dydo's overtime goal lifted Lakes past Carmel Catholic 3-2 in the opening round of the quad hosted by Corsairs in Mundelein.

"We just all got it together in the second half, and the overtime," Dydo said. "We came together and that was probably our best half all season. It was awesome to get the win in the overtime."

The outcome helped the Eagles (4-6-1) avenge a 4-0 shutout loss to the Corsairs (8-4) just last week.

Lakes recovered from a 2-0 halftime deficit and scored twice in the second half. The Eagles got the overtime game-winner from Dydo with an assist from Sean O'Brien 54 seconds into OT.

"It was a great win for us," Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. "We started off really flat. We made some bad decisions that led to 2 goals. We were fortunate to weather the storm. We were finally able to play with our top three players up top."

Nic Rubio scored the first Eagles goal to make it 2-1 in the 50th minute, sending in a ball from 30 yards out that found its way in high off the post.

O'Brien then scored on a header following a Zack Espinosa free kick to tie it at 2-2 in the 71st minute.

Carmel jumped in front with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes, with the Cloe brothers leading the way.

Scott Cloe tallied 51 seconds into the game, and younger brother Brett found the back of the net after a Robert Rao corner kick in the seventh minute.

Getting a third goal proved to be tough for Carmel, partly thanks to the work of Lakes keeper Wade Parmly. He made 7 stops in the second half, including one on a point-blank header in the opening moments of overtime.

"We really dropped the ball," said Carmel Catholic coach Ray Krawzak. "(Lakes) got back into the game. We just let off the pedal off a little too early."

The Corsairs next host Cary-Grove (5-1-2, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday, while Lakes takes on South Elgin at 4:30 p.m at Carmel as the quad continues.
