Sign up now for Pure Pikermi relays set for Oct. 18

Registration continues for Pure Pikermi Half and Full Marathon Relay road running races to be held on Sunday, Oct. 18, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Virgil L. Gilman Trail at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove.

Half marathon teams will consist of 2 persons and marathon teams will be 4 persons each running 6.55 miles.

The out and back course on the picturesque Gilman Trail featuring wildflowers, patches of native prairie, cottonwoods, white poplars, sycamores and oak trees. Runners will wind through Bliss Woods Forest Preserve and by Bliss Creek Golf Course.

The name Pikermi relates to the route of the original "marathon" in Greece, which was from the town of Marathon to Athens approximately 26.2 miles (the distance of a marathon). The town of Pikermi is about the midpoint between Marathon and Athens, therefore being a distance of about 13.1 miles.

Online registration is available until Oct. 16 at www.runtoachieve.com. Race day registration will be 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at the race headquarters at Waubonsee Community College, 47 Waubonsee Drive in Sugar Grove.

Long sleeve one-quarter zip fleece pullovers are available for the first 200 registered runners. Pullovers are available for race-day registrants while supplies last. Finisher medals also will be awarded.

Race fees are $175 per marathon team through Saturday, Oct. 10 and $200 until Friday, Oct. 16 and during race day.

Half-marathon teams are $87.50 per team through October 10 and $100 until Oct. 16 and during race day.

Awards will be presented to each team member for top three teams in six different divisions.

Race proceeds benefit Semper Fi Fund which provides immediate financial assistance and lifetime support to post 9/11 wounded, critically ill and injured members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, and their families.
