Schaumburg Boomers Beat the Heat to help Neighbors In need

Baseball players from the Schaumburg Boomers helped distribute food to Hanover Township residents on Sept. 1 at St. Ansgar Church in Hanover Park.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Schaumburg sponsored the mobile food pantry truck for the sixth year in a row. The money was collected for the cause earlier in the year through an event called Super Bowl Sunday.

At St. Ansgar, over 140 needy families had the opportunity to pick up frozen meats, potatoes, corn, bananas, cereals, soups and frozen entrees from the Northern Illinois Food Bank truck.

Along with 20 volunteers from Prince of Peace and Hanover Township, the Boomers helped residents load their cars up with bags of produce and meats, just in time for the Labor Day weekend. The weather was nearly 90 degrees in the shade, but team members Jordan Dean, Mike Valadez, Peter Gehle, Cam Sherrer, Brett Mabry, Kagen Hopkins and general manager Pete Laven were all smiles helping local families fight hunger.
