Sugar Grove says 'no' to another gambling cafe request

Sugar Grove officials still aren't interested in having video gambling cafes in the village.

Monday night, trustees told that to a prospective cafe owner. A Naperville man wanted to rent a space in a shopping center at Galena Boulevard and Route 47. It would serve breakfast and lunch items, and serve beer and wine. Village administrator Brent Eichelberger said the village has also been approached by people who want to open a Dotty's Cafe video gambling franchise.

But the board is not willing to create a new liquor license for such an establishment.

"I have no interest in this type of business," Trustee Rick Montalto said. "This obviously is a business that is geared toward gambling and liquor ... the only reason we passed it (video gambling) is we were trying to keep the (American) Legion afloat."

Montalto pointed out the board turned down a request in November from the BP Express Lane gasoline station to get a liquor "pour" license so it could put in video gambling terminals.

Trustee Ted Koch said he could allow the gambling as part of a large restaurant.

And Trustee David Paluch suggested they consider doing another kind of business.

"We need a family-oriented, inexpensive restaurant," he said, citing the Apple Villa restaurant in Batavia as an example. But without a liquor license, he added.
