McHenry County deputy dies 11 months after Holiday Hills shooting

Dwight Maness, a McHenry County sheriff's deputy who was shot in Holiday Hills during a call last October, died yesterday, a sheriff's office spokeswoman said. Maness, 47, of McHenry, was one of two deputies injured Oct. 16, 2014, when they responded to a domestic disturbance during which a gunman in Holiday Hills opened fire. Full story.

Verizon Wireless store robbed at gunpoint in St. Charles

Two men robbed a Verizon Wireless store in St. Charles at gunpoint yesterday afternoon, police said. The men entered the store, 2700 E. Main St., just after 4:30 p.m., showed a gun and then took an unknown number of cellphones from the back of the store, police said. Full story.

Construction crane topples, strikes Palatine village hall

A construction crane slowly toppled over yesterday and struck Palatine village hall, which is undergoing major renovations. Village Manager Reid Ottesen said no one was injured and that the early indication is the building did not sustain any structural damage. Full story.
