Hersey, St. Viator claim runner-up invite finishes

Hersey used a 1-2 finish in diving and a pair of wins from sophomore Olivia Kusio to gain a second-place team finish in Saturday's girls swimming and diving invite hosted by Highland Park.

In diving, Madeline Bovino (401.65) and Alexandra Heidrich (339.30) excelled in the 11-dive format.

Kusio took top honors in both the 200-yard IM (2:17.76) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.22).

Kusio also teamed with Sarah Petro, Abby Johnstone and Katherine Gorey as Hersey had the top 400 free relay (3:51.76).

Highland Park had the top team finish at 387.5, with Hersey coming in at 279.

Maine West junior Julie Boesche won the 100 fly in 1:01.71 and had a runner-up placement in the 50 free (24.78).

St. Viator Invite: The host Lions earned the best finish in eight years in the 10-team invite they hosted, taking second place with 294 points behind St. Ignatius (370). Huntley (285) edged Prospect (282.50) for third place.

Key individual efforts for St. Viator came from Jackie Rose, a winner in the 100-yard free (56.86) and second in the 200 IM (2:20.32), and from Julie Warren, third in both the 200 free (2:06.04) and 100 breaststroke (1:17.81).

Lions coach Jamie Klotz also liked Ashley Alteri's second-place effort in the 100 fly (1:05.47) and Maggie McDermott's fourth-place in the 500 free (5:48.30).

Both Lions freestyle relays finished second, and the medley placed fourth as St. Viator competed in its third meet in the last five days.
