ELCA congregations work to improve communities

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Schaumburg, is one of nearly 10,000 congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America participating in "God's Work, Our Hands" on Sunday, Sept. 13. Across the country, thousands of ELCA members are engaging in service work to make a positive change in their communities, build and deepen relationships and share God's love.

Members of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church are working to bring joy to the men and women who are in eight-10 nursing homes in the Schaumburg area by spending time playing Bingo for small prizes and providing snacks and drinks.

For more than 25 years, the ELCA is a church deeply rooted in faith and in sharing its passion for making positive changes in the world. Prince of Peace Lutheran Church joins other ELCA congregations across the country to boldly participate in God's work in the world - restoring and reconciling communities, and pursuing peace and justice.

"My mother resided in a nursing home when she had Alzheimer's disease. It's exciting that Prince of Peace will be bringing joy to nursing home residents by playing games and spending time with them. It's an added bonus that this day happens to fall on Grandparent's Day!" says Janice, a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

More information about the ELCA is available at www.elca.org/dayofservice.

The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with more than 3.8 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of "God's work. Our hands," the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA's roots are in the writings of the German church reformer, Martin Luther.
