Northwest suburbs mark 14th anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks

Ceremonies around the Northwest suburbs throughout the day Friday marked the loss of lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

In Palatine, police and firefighters marched in a procession from Fire Station 85 to the Palatine Firefighters Memorial. Retired firefighter Mark Hallett spoke, firefighter/paramedic Dale Stankiewicz placed a wreath, and firefighter Jeb Kaiser played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes as a somber audience stood with bowed heads. The Palatine Police Department Honor Guard fired a three-volley salute.

In Des Plaines, the mayor, police chief and fire chief spoke at the city's Sept. 11 memorial, which includes a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, an engraved stone and a plaque.

In Hanover Park, a ceremony was held at the veterans memorial at village hall honoring those first responders who lost their lives that day and since.

In Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg Fire Department Lt. John Schneidwind spoke on his experience assisting at ground zero at the World Trade Center after the attacks.

Whatever the number, a need to remember
