Fatal flaws plague Iran deal

Sen. Barbara Mikulski's announcement that she will support the Iranian nuclear deal virtually guarantees that this disastrous treaty will become law. How can anyone read the text of this treaty, and in good conscience assent to its ratification?

There are several serious, I believe fatal, flaws in this treaty, but here are a couple issues to think about.

Treaty supporters continually refer to a "snapback" provision that immediately restores sanctions if Iran violates the treaty. I can find no such provision in the treaty.

There is a procedure for disputes, which doesn't guarantee that sanctions will be restored, because the U.N. Security Council can block the move. When you hear "snapback," think, "If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. Period."

But even if sanctions are restored, the Dispute Resolution Mechanism states: "Iran has stated that if sanctions are reinstated in whole or in part, Iran will treat that as grounds to cease performing its commitments under this JCPOA in whole or in part."

Iran is already blocking IAEA access to the Parchin military site, where past work on nuclear weapons was conducted. Iran can continue weapons research at Parchin, the U.N. will block sanctions restoration because they won't want to disrupt all the new trade that will be going on with Iran, and Iran gets their bomb.

Couple that with this comment attributed to Iranian Brigadier General Kazzemeini on Sept. 2: "(The U.S. and the Zionists) should know that the Islamic Revolution will continue enhancing its preparedness until it overthrows Israel and liberates Palestine."

In addition, by virtue of this treaty, we will become partners in trade, research, finance and other areas with a country on the State Department's list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. Does this trouble anyone?
