COD Astronomy Program to host 'Supermoon' total lunar eclipse viewing Sept. 27

The Astronomy program at College of DuPage will be hosting a viewing of a rare "supermoon" total lunar eclipse from 8 to 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, on the College's main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. Weather permitting, the viewing will be held on the north side of COD's campus outside the Berg Instructional Center (BIC).

This event is free and open to the public.

"This is a great opportunity for people to get a close-up view of a rare celestial treat," said Professor of Astronomy Joe DalSanto. "Since 1910, this event has only occurred five times, every 18 years until it was last seen in 1982. The next occurrence won't happen until 2033."

During the eclipse, participants will have the opportunity to view the eclipse and take photographs using the College's high-tech telescopes and binoculars. In addition, members of the COD Astronomy Club will be on hand to assist with the viewing, provide information and answer questions.

Occurring during the Harvest Moon, this lunar eclipse is the second of two total lunar eclipses to occur in 2015 and the final in a tetrad - four total lunar eclipses to occur serially since April 15, 2014.
