'Devastating' gunshot wound killed Fox Lake cop, coroner says

Lake County Coroner Dr. Thomas Rudd said Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz died from "a single devastating gunshot wound," but he would not comment on the location of the fatal wound or how many times the veteran police officer may have been shot. Rudd also said he hasn't yet issued a final report on the manner of death - homicide, suicide or accident - because he hasn't received a final report on the investigation from the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. Education Secretary Arne Duncan praises Harper's Promise program

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan says a program at Harper College that promises high school students two years of free education for being good students could serve as a nationwide model for colleges that work with communities to promote college readiness and career success. Wife of Bartlett village attorney dies after Bloomingdale crash

Jill Mraz, a Roselle mother of four, has died and her husband, Bartlett's longtime village attorney, remains hospitalized after a crash with a semitrailer truck in Bloomingdale, police and Bartlett officials said. Jill Mraz, who was driving the SUV, died about 7:21 p.m. Tuesday at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital in Glendale Heights. Full story.

State Senate seals override of Rauner's veto on heroin antidotes

Lawmakers finished overruling Gov. Bruce Rauner's rewrite of sweeping anti-heroin legislation yesterday, creating a new law that seeks to make overdose antidotes more readily available and focus on treatment of addicts. Rauner has largely been able to keep his vetoes on legislation intact despite Democrats' attempts to override him. His heroin veto was an exception as lawmakers of both parties pushed back. Lawsuit: Priest assaulted boy in 1970s at St. Rita's in Aurora

A lawsuit filed earlier this week accuses a priest of sexually assaulting a 7- to 9-year-old boy at St. Rita's of Cascia parish in Aurora between 1972 and 1973. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday by plaintiff "John Doe JP," alleges the Rev. John Holdren, who worked at four different churches for the Rockford Diocese from 1972 to 1994, manipulated the boy's emotions to groom him and gain control over him, according to a statement by the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. New Gurnee park celebrated where grade school once flooded

Memories of volunteers scrambling to protect Gurnee Grade School from Des Plaines River flooding still lingered when the property officially started its new life yesterday. About 200 spectators gathered to celebrate the grand opening for a Viking Park extension on the old school site on Kilbourne Road. Now controlled by the Gurnee Park District, the land's use for a school dated to 1840. Full story.

Rob Brantly smacked a 3-run homer for his first American League hit, and rookie Carlos Rodon allowed one run through seven innings to lead the Chicago White Sox past the Cleveland Indians 7-4 last night.
