Football: Mettetal, Panasiuk net Week 2 MVP honors

St. Charles North junior quarterback Zach Mettetal and Lake Park junior defensive lineman Jacub Panasiuk have earned Daily Herald MVP honors for their high school football performances in Week 2.

OFFENSE

Zach Mettetal, St. Charles North: Committed to Memphis to play baseball, this junior shined in a sauna-like September matinee, picking apart the Bartlett secondary for a 35-13 victory. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound quarterback completed 24 of 33 passes for 344 yards and 4 touchdowns, 3 of them to wide receiver Jayson Reckards, as the North Stars improved to 2-0.

Bobby Jarosz, Prospect: Jarosz was a force as Prospect edged visiting Hoffman Estates 14-7. The senior running back finished with 204 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, setting the tone for an offense that made all its gains on the ground.

Jordan Rowell, IC Catholic Prep: In ICCP's 56-28 nonconference victory over Evergreen Park, Rowell outraced the pursuit. The 6-foot-2, 194-pound junior tailback ran the football 20 times for 206 yards and 4 touchdowns. Averaging 10.3 yards a carry, his long run went for 58 yards. He added 5 receptions for 28 yards.

Jack Sorenson, Stevenson: A week after suffering a concussion in the first quarter and missing the rest of the game, the senior quarterback bounced back. He kept the Patriots close all night in their 43-29 loss to Homewood-Flossmoor in a rematch of last year's Class 8A state title game. He rushed for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns and threw for 224 yards and a TD.

DEFENSE

Jacub Panasiuk, Lake Park: The 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior defensive lineman dominated in a huge 17-13 DuPage Valley Conference victory over Wheaton Warrenville South. Panasiuk had a sack and 3.5 tackles for loss among his 7 total tackles. He blocked an extra point, forced a fumble and on offense caught a 16-yard pass.

Brian "Nino" Adkins, Streamwood: This senior excelled in all three phases of the game against Dundee-Crown, and his big play on defense sealed Streamwood's 28-14 victory. A three-year varsity performer, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder had already scored on an 85-yard kickoff return and a 33-yard catch-and-run when the cornerback delivered the backbreaker: a 65-yard interception return that staked the Sabres to a 28-7, third-quarter lead.

Dale Trusky III, Antioch: The senior outside linebacker hasn't scored one of the Sequoits' three defensive touchdowns in the first two weeks, but he's certainly been impactful. Against Moline, he forced 2 fumbles, recovering one of them, and also was credited with a sack, as the Sequoits pulled away for a 30-6 win. Both of his forced fumbles led to touchdowns.

Tony Vezzetti, Schaumburg: The Saxons' senior linebacker helped lead an inspired effort against Rolling Meadows, coming up with a total of 12 tackles, including 5 for loss, 2 of which were quarterback sacks as Schaumburg earned a 14-13 victory.
