Elgin teen shot in leg

An Elgin teen was shot in the leg about 6:45 a.m. today, police said.

The 16-year-old victim told police he and two friends were driving on the 300 block of St. Charles Street when someone shot at them; he was hit, so they drove to Presence St. Joseph Hospital. The teen's injuries are not life-threatening, according to Police Cmdr. Dan O'Shea.

Police received a report of shots fired and were investigating when they learned a gunshot victim had been in the emergency room.

Detectives from the Gang Unit and Major Investigations Division are investigating.
