Civil War Encampment comes to Batavia Sept 10-13

The Batavia Depot Museum will host a free Civil War Encampment Sept. 10-13 in downtown Batavia.

The event will include a number of activities, including cannon drills, horse demos, signals demos, medical lectures, ladies tea and more.

On Thursday, Sept. 10, three Civil War citizens will tell their story of the impact of the end of the war at 7 p.m. in the Batavia City Council Chambers, 100 N. Island Ave. Admission is free.

On Friday, Sept. 11, an opening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at the Riverwalk to celebrate Patriot's Day. The Batavia Community Orchestra will perform. All ages are welcome, and admission is free.

On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13, there will be a number of activities for kids and adults held throughout the day at the Riverwalk. President Lincoln will address the crowd for his second Inaugural Address at 1 p.m. A Ladies Tea will be held at 1:30 p.m. inside the Peg Bond Center. Donna Daniels will explore the intricacies of mourning in the 19th century. General Grant will speak on the end of the war at 2:45 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, there will be a special night signals demonstration using Civil War-style signal torches. See how fire was used to send messages at night. The demonstration will be held at 8 p.m. at the Riverwalk. A campfire singalong and ice cream will follow.
