Celebrate St. Charles Municipal Building's 75th anniversary Sept. 12

The city of St. Charles and the St. Charles History Museum will host a celebration marking the 75th anniversary of the opening of the St. Charles Municipal Building from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.

There will be tours, music, trivia and museum exhibit highlight the historic building at 2 E. Main St.

Representatives from the American Institute of Architects Illinois Council will present the 2015 Charles Nothnagel Award for Public Service to St. Charles resident Mike Dixon at 1 p.m. Dixon, an architect and longtime volunteer serving numerous civic organizations both locally and internationally, was instrumental in the Municipal Building being named to the National Register of Historic Places and was the principal architect on the atrium annex connecting the 1940s Municipal Building with the original 1890s City Building.

Guided tours of the Municipal Building and an Architectural Treasure Hunt for Kids will be offered from 1:15 to 3 p.m. Learn some fun and interesting facts about the Municipal Building history and design.

As part of St. Charles Jazz Weekend, the Alex Murphy Jazz Trio will be playing as you enjoy anniversary cake from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Volunteer Plaza.

Stop by "A Look at Zook" exhibit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Charles History Museum, 215 E. Main St. The exhibit, dedicated to the Municipal Building's principal architect, is currently open and runs through Nov. 28 at the museum.

You also can test your knowledge of St. Charles history in the Municipal Building Trivia Contest. You could win a $10 Chamber of Contest gift certificate.

Founded as the St. Charles Historical Society in 1933, the St. Charles History Museum has been collecting, preserving, and presenting St. Charles history ever since.
