Elgin man charged with threatening to blow up court clerk's office

An Elgin man has been charged with threatening a public official by writing a note saying he was going to blow up the Kane County circuit court clerk's main office in St. Charles, according to the Kane County sheriff.

Omar Betancourt, 21, was arrested Monday at his home.

According to a news release from the sheriff's office, an employee found the note while cleaning a table in the public portion of the office at 540 S. Randall Road. Employees knew who had been sitting at the table, and identified Betancourt as the suspect.

No suspicious packages were found in the area.

Betancourt is charged with felony threatening a public official and felony disorderly conduct.

Bail was set Wednesday at $30,000, and as of Wednesday afternoon he remained in the Kane County jail. His next court date is Sept. 10.

According to Kane County court records, Betancourt is awaiting trials on a charge of retail theft, a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and a charge of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
