Mundelein maintains winning momentum

Riding high off their Saturday win against some of the best teams around, Mundelein's boys golf team returned home for a match with Libertyville on Tuesday.

But first, just a quick glance back at the monumental win on Saturday at Bittersweet in Gurnee.

"That was one of my more shocking wins, in either golf or baseball,'' said Mundelein golf coach Todd Parola. "I wasn't expecting that. If we played those teams 100 times, we wouldn't win but this one time we did."

On Tuesday, the weather was perfect for an outing for these friendly rivals as Mundelein stopped Libertyville 145-155.

Nick Chuma, a Mustangs senior, shot a respectable 37 in this win. On the fourth hole, he almost went home with a double eagle, settling instead for a single.

"I hit a 5-wood into the green from about 220,'' Chuma said. "It landed about 6 inches from the cup."

On 7, he threatened to land another eagle. This time he landed a birdie.

"It was about a foot from the hole,'' he said. "I almost slam dunked it."

Chuma thinks his Mustangs could be ready for a big campaign.

"We have five guys who can score really well,'' he said.

Ryan Magee of Mundelein took home medalist honors with a solid 35.

"I hit a lot of fairways,'' Magee said. "It was easy golf. I had no bogeys. I had tap-in pars. It was no stress."

Parola was glad to see his team play another strong round.

"145 is a good score,'' Parola said. "That's 1 over par. Not having to count a 38 is big."

Tyler White came in with a 36 for Mundelein, while Zach Zentz joined Chuma with a 37. Brett Parola contributed a 38 and Mikey Nieckula a 41.

Libertyville coach Sean Matthews had no complaints about his team's score.

"We played very well,'' Matthews said. "Mundelein is just a tough, tough team. We really want to stay under 160."

The Cats reported three 38's. One of them came from top player Jacob Mueller.

"We had a rough go,'' Mueller said. "We just haven't played Steeplechase much."

Also shooting 38 were Michael Watt and Mitch Kenston. Michael Sefton had a 41, and Michael Watson (43) and George Frangos (45) also contributed for Libertyville.
