High-tech 4DX theater to open in Gurnee
The Chicago area's first 4DX theater - which will incorporate special effects including scents and motion - will open in Gurnee this fall, officials from Marcus Theatres and CJ 4DPLEX announced Tuesday.
Work will begin soon at the Marcus Gurnee Cinema, 6144 Grand Ave., to bring the high-tech, five-sense 4DX "cinematic experience" to the movie theater in Gurnee Mills. It should be open in November, company officials said.
4DX is a type of four-dimension technology that enhances action-packed blockbuster movies with special effects such as wind, fog, rain, lighting, seat vibrations and smells. While there are other 4-D theater experiences in the Midwest, including one at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, this is the first movie theater of the 4DX brand in the area, from Korea-based CJ 4DPLEX.
The 4DX brand debuted in the U.S. last year in Los Angeles. Among the movies that have recently been screened in 4DX theaters are "Transformers: Age of Extinction," "Furious 7," "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Jurassic World."
