Fire cleanup prompts Second City to cancel more shows

The Second City announced on Monday it will cancel shows through Sunday, Sept. 6, to continue cleanup from a nearby fire last Wednesday in Chicago's Piper's Alley.

A Chicago Fire Department spokesman said the blaze, which started at Adobo Grill, spread from the restaurant through vents in the roof, causing damage to Second City offices, but not the stage.

According to a message on the theater's website, training center classes are canceled through Tuesday, Sept. 1, and may resume Wednesday, Sept. 2. Performances are scheduled to resume Sept. 7 at 1616 N. Wells St., Chicago, according to the website. For information, call (312) 337-3992 or see secondcity.com.

Second City has been a showcase for sketch comedy and an improv training center since it opened in 1959. Alumni include Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, Bill Murray, George Wendt and Fred Willard among others.
