SpongeBob aims for Broadway via Chicago

Nickelodeon's hit animated TV series “SpongeBob SquarePants” is aiming to make the leap to the Broadway stage with a world premiere of “The SpongeBob Musical” in Chicago.

The pre-Broadway run of the musical will be at Chicago's Oriental Theatre from Tuesday, June 7, to Sunday, July 3, 2016. The show is co-conceived and directed by Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Tina Landau (“Superior Donuts,” “The Wheel”), while Tony Award-winning songwriter Tom Kitt (“Next to Normal,” “If/Then”) arranges a score of new songs written by a panoply of pop stars like Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Jonathan Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants and T.I., with an additional song by David Bowie with additional lyrics by Coulton.

The musical's script is by Kyle Jarrow, best known theatrically for “A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant.”

“The SpongeBob Musical” will be part of Broadway In Chicago's subscription series, on sale in October. Group tickets for 10 or more are now on sale by calling (312) 977-1710. Individual tickets will go on sale at a later date. For more information, visit broadwayinchicago.com.
