Why the Vietnam War was unwinnable

Regardless of your opinion on the wisdom or success of the Vietnam War, an author's upcoming visit to Cantigny Park will offer something to think about.

Best-selling author John Prados discusses "Vietnam: The History of an Unwinnable War, 1945-1975" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Le Jardin restaurant inside Cantigny Park Visitors Center, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. His visit is presented by Cantigny's First Division Museum.

Vietnam continues to be the focus of intense controversy. While most people agree the United States did not win the war, a vocal minority argue the opposite or debate why victory never came.

In his book, Prados reassesses one of our nation's most tragic episodes. His account weaves together multiple perspectives across an epic-sized canvas where domestic politics, ideologies, nations and militaries all collide.

Prados holds a doctorate from Columbia University in political science (international relations) and focuses on presidential power, international relations, intelligence and military affairs. Based in Washington, D.C., he is the author of more than 20 books and many articles. "Vietnam: The History of an Unwinnable War, 1945-1975" won the Henry Adams Prize in American History. Prados is also a noted designer of board games on military strategy, intelligence and diplomacy.

Copies of "Vietnam: Unwinnable War" may be purchased in the Cantigny Shop at the event. A book-signing will follow the lecture.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Parking and the program free. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., a cash bar is available along with a limited food menu. Coffee is complimentary.

The event is part of the First Division Museum's Date with History, a monthly series featuring lively discussions with authors, panelists, historians and special guests. Information about upcoming programs is online at firstdivisionmuseum.org.
