Boomers fall to Gateway Grizzlies

The Schaumburg Boomers kicked off the final homestand of the season by dropping an 8-2 decision to the Gateway Grizzlies Friday night.

Gateway took advantage of a franchise record five errors by the Boomers, scoring seven unearned runs. The Grizzlies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning against starter Taylor Thurber. Thurber allowed the first unearned run in the fifth as Gateway led 2-0. Schaumburg evened the game in the bottom of the frame. Willi Martin led off the inning with a single and scored from first on a double from Robby Spencer, who posted three hits in the game. Michael Valadez doubled home Spencer to tie the game. Gateway responded with three in the top of the sixth and did not look back, finishing with 17 hits and receiving a complete game from starter Vincent Molesky.

The Boomers (36-52) continue the final homestand of the season Saturday night when the Gateway Grizzlies visit for a 6 p.m. game featuring postgame fireworks.
