State charges DuPage tobacco store owner with tax fraud

A DuPage County man who operated a tobacco store in Glendale Heights is facing theft and tax fraud charges after state revenue officials said he underreported sales tax liabilities over three years by nearly $400,000.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office announced the arrest of 37-year-old Tale Aburukbeh Friday.

Aburukbeh lives in an unincorporated part of DuPage County near his store on the 200 block of E. Army Trail Road.

His arrest stems from an Illinois Department of Revenue investigation that uncovered fraudulent sales tax filings between August 2011 and July 2014 in the amount of $391,000, prosecutors said.

He posted 10 percent of his $250,000 bail amount and has been released from the DuPage County jail, sheriff's officials said. His next court appearance is slated for Sept. 1.

The charge of theft of government property over $100,000 is a Class X felony and carries a maximum sentence of 35 years in prison if convicted.
