Neighborhood profile: Pinehurst in Mill Creek, Geneva

Eight years ago when Lindi and Dan Hannigan moved from Colorado to the Chicago suburbs, they knew they didn't want to shovel snow. So when the couple found a maintenance-free, single-family home in the Pinehurst neighborhood at Mill Creek in Geneva, it was love at first sight.

"My husband is a pilot, so he is gone a lot, and in the winter, I just get up and leave for work because everything is shoveled," Lindi Hannigan said. That aspect of the neighborhood was very appealing to the couple.

"Our house is smaller, which is the right size for us, and we have a lot of space on either side. Also, we have a small yard, which is perfect for our little dachshunds to get out and run around," Hannigan said.

"We like the golf course; we live off the 10th tee with a nice view out front. And we like all the walking and running paths. We really enjoy getting out. I'm a runner, and my husband likes to walk."

Situated on Fabyan Parkway west of Randall Road, Mill Creek by Shodeen Homes features an award-winning, master-planned community that offers a variety of home options including high-end custom designs.

The Pinehurst neighborhood is unique in that it features maintenance-free, detached single-family homes, each with a two-car garage, said Joyce Courtney, managing broker and owner of The HomeCourt Real Estate. "There aren't any other communities that are not age specific where you can buy a maintenance-free, single-family detached home with a yard."

Pinehurst features a variety of homes, mostly single-family detached homes with two sections - row homes and village homes - ranging from 1,400 to 3,300 square feet. The neighborhood also offers townhouses, duplexes, some high-end apartments and commercial space.

The single-family homes are mostly two stories with a few ranches. Many feature a first-floor master bedroom. Because of the contour of the land, some homes were built with English or walkout basements.

Most houses have a deck or patio, and almost all homes have a charming front porch, Courtney said.

Buyers have a choice of contemporary or traditional styles that can be customized. Courtney said contemporary homes are very open inside while the traditional interiors almost look like a house seen in Charleston, S.C.

The neighborhood is laid out with commercial space at its center with a local market for groceries and a deli, dentist, dry cleaners, hair salon and dance studio.

"Residents of this neighborhood love their alley parties every other Friday night that moves from garage to garage. People bring a beverage and hors d'oeuvres, and it's very nice. It's a tight-knit little community in the alley," Courtney said.

Mill Creek is modeled after a traditional country town where the elementary school, churches, shopping and restaurants are all within the community.

For recreation, the community features two golf courses; a swimming pool facility with playground area, community room, concession stands and locker rooms; parks; and playing fields.

About 45 percent of the 650-acre community is open to nature and recreation. There are 17 miles of biking and hiking trails that are used for cross-country skiing during the winter, 72 acres of parks and 127 acres of wetland preserves.

Residents of Mill Creek also enjoy the charming town of Geneva with its picturesque setting on the Fox River.

Much like row houses in the city, homes in Pinehurst at Mill Creek are built closer to the curb with alleys and rear-loading garages behind.
