Chicago White Sox uniforms show spirit of 1976

The White Sox weren't wearing bad leisure suits before or after Thursday night's game against the Mariners at U.S. Cellular Field.

During the game, the Sox went big on "Throwback Thursday," wearing their 1976 uniforms that featured collared, blue and white V-neck jerseys, dark blue pants and striped white socks.

The uniforms looked dated, but at least the White Sox took a pass on wearing the shorts that occasionally accompanied the collared tops back in '76.

"I wouldn't want guys sliding in shorts," manager Robin Ventura said.

While the throwback uniforms were a bit hard on the eyes, the tops were untucked and comfortable.

"I like them," Ventura said. "I've always heard they're the most comfortable uniform everybody has ever worn. They (players) don't necessarily like the way they look, but the comfort is going to be good."

Third baseman Tyler Saladino was born in 1989 and didn't have any recollection of the White Sox' '76 uniforms.

Saladino did like the collar.

"I might just leave it on after the game," he said. "Go out and grab a bite to eat."

As for the shorts, Saladino would have been game if the Sox decided to bust them out.

"I'll put some shorts on and play," he said. "If I was in some shorts, I'd feel loose. I'm the guy that would probably want to roll around in the dirt and get scraped up. I love it."

Garcia heats up:

With 16 RBI in his last 22 games, including 2 against the Mariners Thursday night, Avisail Garcia has been living up to some lofty expectations.

Garcia, who was the White Sox' designated hitter against Seattle, still has room to improve.

"He's a young player," manager Robin Ventura said of the 24-year-old right fielder. "People forget this is really his first full year getting through the league. With any young player there are things to improve on. He probably hits the ball on the ground too much for a guy with his size and power.

"He'll learn to elevate and get balls in the air and take advantage of his strength. Defensively, we're always working on that and he's got room to grow, definitely.

"Effort, that stuff what he's doing, we've been happy with him being able to make adjustments."

Prospect watch:

In 6 starts with high Class A Winston-Salem, Carson Fulmer has no decisions and a 2.81 ERA.

Fulmer, the No. 8 overall pick in the June draft out of Vanderbilt, has allowed 11 hits and struck out 17 in 16 innings.
