Schaumburg Boy Scout earns Eagle after planting butterfly garden

Jimmy Minard, a 15-year-old Boy Scout who attends Schaumburg High School, planted a butterfly garden at the Alexian Village of Elk Grove assisted-living facility last weekend to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

The Elk Grove Village facility was chosen as the location because that's where Jimmy's great-grandmother lives. Along with the plants specifically intended to attract butterflies, the garden also includes some plants from the garden of her former home.

The two-day installation process consisted mostly of plantings, but also included a small fountain, said his father, Jeff Minard.

Even before the end of the weekend, the first butterfly was observed visiting the garden.

At 15, Jimmy is relatively young to have attained that level of scouting, Jeff Minard said.
