Educators: Learn how to borrow artifacts from ancient cultures

Northwest Suburban High School District 214 is hosting a free workshop in September for instructors from all educational settings interested in borrowing educational materials through a new University of Illinois Extension program.

The program, An Artifact Speaks, loans educational materials for free and examines the cultures of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia, China and India through artifacts (modern authentic and ancient replica), DVDs, lesson plans with artifact information sheets, games, folk tales and hands-on activities.

Participants will learn how to borrow and use these materials during the interactive workshop, which is open to teachers, librarians, Scout leaders, adult group leaders and other interested educators.

The three-hour workshop will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights. It will be led by Kim Sheahan, assistant director of education for the Spurlock Museum at the University of Illinois.

Illinois K-12 educators who participate in the workshop are eligible to receive three Illinois State Board of Education approved professional development hours.
