'Give a Pint, Get a Pint' at Taylor YMCA blood drive Sept. 18

The Taylor Family YMCA's "TOGETHERHOOD" volunteer group is partnering with Heartland Blood Centers for a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the Y, 50 N. McLean Blvd. in Elgin.

All donors will receive a certificate for a pint of Culver's custard!

The YMCA is partnering with Heartland Blood Centers, because like the YMCA, it is an independent nonprofit organization. Heartland Blood Centers serves 63 hospitals in a 12-county area including Kane County. Heartland operates under a volunteer lead donor system and works toward collecting more than 200,000 units of blood annually.

According to the American Red Cross, more than 41,000 blood donations are needed each day, and one pint of blood has the ability to save three lives. It is estimated that 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but less than 10 percent actually donate.

To schedule an appointment, visit www.heartlanbc.org, call (224) 699-5802, or stop in the YMCA.

Photo identification is required to donate, and although appointments are preferred, walk-ins are welcome. Donors are encouraged to eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating.

At the Y, they are dedicated to strengthening communities by giving back and supporting neighbors. 'TOGETHERHOOD" invites members to participate in the Y's cause to strengthen communities. Collecting school supplies, donating blood, or running a park cleanup are just some of the countless ways Y members and their friends and families can come together with the Y staff in service to their community.
