Vernon Hills 3, Niles North 2: Andre Szmyt scored twice, as the Cougars won their opening game in their own Cougar Classic.

Brennan Reback made 7 saves in net for Vernon Hills, which also got a goal from Jose Sanchez and an assist from Joseph Lee.

"We played well for 40 minutes tonight," coach Mike McCaulou said. "I thought for our first game we did some nice things. Obviously, we have some things to work on, but that is expected for your first game. I was proud of the way we started and tried to play, and I was proud of our team for being resilient in the second half and finding a way to close out the game."

Grayslake Central 2, Johnsburg 1 (PK): At Vernon Hills, the Rams prevailed 3-2 in penalty kicks.

Randy Betancourth scored the equalizer in the second half for Grayslake Central, which trailed 1-0 at halftime. Nicholas Walker had the assist.

Grayslake Central 1, Niles North 0: At Vernon Hills, the Rams won their second game of the day, as Leobardo Orozco scored in the second half off an assist from Nicholas Walker.

Connor Gosell earned the shutout with 3 saves.

Woodstock 2, Wauconda 1: Taiga Miyaryo scored off an assist from Christopher Fox for the host Bulldogs' lone goal in their season opener.

Rolling Meadows 1, Grayslake North 0: Sophomore Josh Suciu made 4 saves in net for the Knights in the opening game of their own invite.
