Girls golf: Hersey ends Prospect's impressive streak

Hersey's girls golf team produced its biggest win under in coach Dan Vesper's three seasons when it ended Prospect's 85-match Mid-Suburban League winning streak on Tuesday.

Hersey shot a 169 to edge the Knights (173) while Rolling Meadows (206) was third in the tri-meet held at the Rob Roy Golf Course in Prospect Heights.

The Huskies' sizzling clubs were led by junior Maggie Anderson, who shot the best nine holes of her career with a 39 that included two birdies and no double bogeys.

"It's exciting," Vesper said. "The girls just played good, solid consistent golf. They didn't have any blow-up holes."

Anderson's previous best round was a 40 last season.

"Maggie just played real consistent golf," Vesper said. "To play like that against one of the best teams in the state is terrific. There was a lot of pressure on her and she handled it real well."

Completing Hersey's score card were junior Megan Kopeny (41), senior Lexi Heidkamp (42), junior Jasmin Lee (46) and senior Jamie Ziah (46).

Prospect was led by junior Sabrina Accardi (41), junior Kate Ponzi (42) freshman Emily Fleming (45) and junior Mary Schafer (45).

"Our other girls didn't shoot their best scores but they played good, smart golf where they didn't have any holes to take them out of their round," Vesper said. "We knew that they (Prospect) were good and they still will be. It's an amazing program but I didn't know it had been that long since they had lost."

Hersey became the first MSL East team to defeat Prospect in at least 11 years.

"Hersey did a much better job than us inside 50 yards and stayed away from the big numbers," said Knights coach Jim Hamann, whose team plays its first home match in more than a year at the Mt. Prospect Golf Club on Thursday against Barrington and Palatine.

"Hersey has a great group of girls and they are well coached. Congratulations to the Huskies for the win."

Hersey comes back Thursday to face Buffalo Grove and Fremd at Palatine Hills.

"When you get three or four girls to shoot around their averages like we did (on Tuesday), you can beat anyone on a given day," Vesper said. "It could be a heck of a week for Hersey golf if we can do something special on Thursday. But Fremd and Buffalo Grove are really good teams, too.

"You might get one great win like we did but you have to beat five or six great teams to advance in a regional or sectional. That's how good the golf is in this area."

Bridget Anderson led Meadows with a 50, followed by Nicole Von Oesen (51), Megan Fallon (52) and Caroline Smith (53).

Barrington wins two: Barrington got off to a 2-0 start in the MSL by shooting a 154 at Bonnie Dundee in Carpentersville to top Conant (172) and Wheeling.

Juniors Reena Sulkar and Shivani Majmudar shot 36s to share medalist honors for the hosts followed by freshmen Nicole Ciskowski 41 and Ishani Majmudar 41.

Megan Nagorzanski (41) and Tida Bowers (42) led Conant while Kirsten Wilhelm shot 51 for Wheeling

Buffalo Grove wins two: Buffalo Grove (169) topped Schaumburg (177) and Elk Grove (210) as BG senior Emily Carnes earned medalist honors with a 38 at the Schaumburg Golf Course.

Haeri Lee (39), Jasmine Yi (45) and Katie Fontanetta (47) had the next lowest scores fro BG.

Host Schaumburg was led by Jennifer Cappello (42) and Trinity Corwin (42) while Amy Carpenter led EG with a 46.
