Boomers hold off Slammers 6-4
The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers opened a road series with the Joliet Slammers by notching a 6-4 victory.
Joliet took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of third against Schaumburg starter Brett Mabry. Mabry settled down and retired 14 straight, working 7 innings to earn the win. The Boomers were able to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Michael Valadez drew a bases loaded walk and Robby Spencer evened the score with a sacrifice fly. TJ Bennett lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth to put Schaumburg ahead. Ken Kirshner nailed a 3-run homer in the sixth to pad the lead. Joliet scored twice in the ninth but stranded the tying runs.
Schaumburg finished with 13 hits. Ryan Brockett finished 3-for-4 with a walk. John Menken tallied a pair of hits and the South Elgin native has recorded a hit in every game as a professional. Kyle Ruchim notched 2 hits and has reached in 17 straight contests. Willi Martin also finished with 2 hits.
The Boomers (35-50) continue the series at Joliet on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Peter Gehle (2-5, 7.20) starts for Schaumburg against RHP Andrew Strenge (6-7, 4.71).
Schaumburg still has six home games remaining.
