Crossing guards at work for now in District 21

Crossing guards helped students in Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 make their way to school Monday despite a dispute over whether the school district or Buffalo Grove should pay their wages.

Buffalo Grove Village Manager Dane Bragg and District 21 Superintendent Kate Hyland reached a temporary agreement Friday for each side to pay half the cost of the crossing guards at the three District 21 intersections for two months.

The agreement came just two days after parents received robocalls and emails from District 21 saying the village wouldn't provide crossing guards on the first day of school.

Bragg said last week that the village decided to cut the crossing guard service after District 21 "was not able to give any signal that they would pay" the $24,000 Buffalo Grove says it's owed for two years of providing crossing guards.

The temporary agreement doesn't yet require District 21 to pay the $24,000, and it's unclear what will happen after the deal expires.

Buffalo Grove provides crossing guards at three District 21 intersections: Arlington Heights Road and Bernard Drive near Longfellow Elementary School and Cooper Middle School; Raupp Boulevard and Golfview Terrace near Kilmer Elementary School; and Anthony Road and Cambridge Drive near Tarkington Elementary School.
