Wheeling chiropractic group operators indicted in $10.8 million fraud

Three family members who operated Gordin Medical Center, a chiropractic group in Wheeling, have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of participating in a $10.8 million fraud scheme.

Vladimir Gordin Jr. of Northbrook, Vladimir Gordin Sr. of Riverwoods and Alexsander Gordin of Northbrook all were charged with billing insurance companies for medically unnecessary treatments and treatments never performed.

The Gordins tried to hide the scam by changing patient medical records, according to the indictment, which alleges the three submitted bills totaling $28.8 million and received $10.8 million from insurance companies between 2006 and 2012.

Some patients were aware of the scheme and were rewarded for participating with their deductibles met at no cost and the promise of a cut of the profits from the overbilling. The kickbacks were provided to patients via checks from the Gordins, according to the indictment.

Gordin Medical's office manager, Alina Levit, and Vernon Hills ultrasound technician Michelle Kobran were also charged.

Levit fabricated sign-in sheets falsely showing patients were physically present and receiving treatment when, in fact, they did not receive services, according to the indictment.

Kobran owned and operated Ultrasound Mobile Service Ltd. and charged insurance companies for unnecessary ultrasounds performed on patients the Gordins referred to her, the indictment states, and then gave part of the insurance money to the Gordins.

The 21-count indictment was returned Thursday to a federal court in Chicago.

Vladimir Gordin Jr. and Vladimir Gordin Sr. were both charged with counts of health care fraud and aggravated identity theft. Alexsander Gordin, Levit and Kobran were all charged with counts of health care fraud.

A health care fraud conviction carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. Aggravated identity theft is punishable by two to 20 years in prison sentence plus a $250,000 fine.

Gordin Medical Services was at 350 E. Dundee Road.

Arraignment dates have not been set.
