Boomers split doubleheader with Beach Bums
The Schaumburg Boomers split a doubleheader with the Traverse City Beach Bums on Wednesday afternoon.
Schaumburg picked up the continuation of a suspended game from Tuesday night in the opener, logging a 14-11 decision. The Boomers led 10-0 in the contest before the rain on Tuesday only to watch as Traverse City tied the game on Wednesday, scoring 5 runs in the sixth. Alexi Colon lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh to put Schaumburg ahead. Ken Kirshner notched an RBI single and Willi Martin a 2-run single as the Boomers grabbed a 14-10 edge. Martin finished with 4 RBIs in the contest as the Boomers accumulated a season-high total for hits and runs. Jake Joyce earned the win out of the bullpen on his birthday.
The second contest saw Traverse City notch a 5-0 lead in the second inning and hold on for a 10-7 decision. Jared Welch hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning. The Boomers were down 9-2, but scored 5 unanswered runs. TJ Bennett picked up a 2-run triple in the fourth and Colon a 2-run homer in the fifth. Colon homered in both games of the twin bill. Welch finished with three RBIs.
The Boomers (33-47) conclude the series with Traverse City on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. as part of 21 & Over Night. RHP Brett Mabry (5-3, 3.61) takes the ball in the rubber contest with LHP Ian MacDougall (9-4, 2.20) on the hill for Traverse City.
