Round Lake Exchange Club names August hero

The Round Lake Area Exchange Club has named U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Sharon Kallner of Round Lake Heights as its August Hometown Hero.

Kallner, who was registered for the honor by her parents, Steve and Paula Kallner, also from Round Lake Heights, has served in the Navy for six years and is a 2007 graduate from Grant Community High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice, specializing in Homeland Security, from St. Leo University.

She currently serves as a first class information systems technician, operating and maintaining the Navy's global satellite telecommunications systems, mainframe computers, local and wide area networks, and microcomputer systems used in the fleet. She is also an active member of the USS Gerald Ford soccer team.

Some of the awards and medals Kallner has earned are Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Expeditionary Warfare Pin earned while serving with Seal Team 2 in Afghanistan and Information Dominance Warfare Pin.

With the support of this month's sponsor, Diana's Salon and Spa, Kallner's "Hanging with the Heroes" care package will include Skittles, beef jerky, and other snacks and goodies. Also included is a personalized "Hanging with the Heroes" T-shirt donated by Artrageous of Hainesville.

The Round Lake Area Exchange Club will present a plaque on her behalf Wednesday, Aug. 26, at their meeting in Round Lake.
