Barrington replaces trustee who moved to Germany

Barrington Trustee Robert Windon resigned his post last week after his wife accepted a job in Germany.

His seat did not stay vacant for long, as the village board on Monday unanimously approved longtime resident Todd Sholeen to serve until the consolidated election in 2017.

Village President Karen Darch said Windon's wife, Allison, got a great opportunity to work overseas for a few years.

"It was hard because he'd just won re-election in the spring and has done a good job and really likes his service," Darch said. "But he really couldn't pass it up."

In Windon's resignation letter, which was sent to the village last Monday from his family's new home in Munich, he thanked the village for allowing him to serve on the board.

"It has been a privilege and honor to serve the residents of Barrington," Windon, who was first elected to the board in 2011, wrote.

"But due to a temporary family relocation to Germany, I believe it is in the best interest of the village for me to step aside."

An email sent to Windon in Germany was not immediately answered Monday afternoon.

Sholeen said he was looking forward to the opportunity to serve on the board.

"I think the village is going along in the right direction and would just like to see it move forward," Sholeen said.

Darch said she recommended Sholeen fill the spot on the board because of his experience in municipal government.

Sholeen, a 23-year resident of the village, has been serving as a plan commission member since 2008. Before that, he spent three years on the zoning board of appeals.

"He came with good experience and is really ready to step in and not miss a beat," Darch said.

In his day job, Sholeen works as a relationship manager for First Merit Bank. He said all of his customers are government entities in northeastern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

He said he doesn't know yet whether he will run for a full term in 2017
