Mattress fundraiser supports Batavia music programs

Is your mattress lumpier than Great Aunt Evelyn's gravy? Do you need a road map to navigate the hills and valleys? Can you feel the springs move under your feet, your legs, your back?

It may be time to replace that old mattress.

Most mattresses have a life span of about 10 years.

"However, 9.9 percent of the population of the United States buys a brand new mattress every year," said Joe Majteka, president and founder of Custom Fundraising Solutions,

Custom Fundraising Solutions will be bringing name-brand mattresses to the Batavia High School cafeteria on Saturday, Aug. 22, to support the Batavia Music Buffs, the fundraising group for music programs in Batavia schools; elementary through high school.

According to Consumer Reports, "Mainstream innerspring mattress sets from major labels carry gross profit margins of 30 to 40 percent each for wholesalers and retailers. More luxurious models are even bigger moneymakers, with margins for the retailer of around 50 percent."

Isn't it better that the profit goes to supporting our school music programs?

The Batavia Music Buffs have been raising money since 1977. Through fundraisers like the Hoagie sale and the Cheese and Sausage sale, the organization has been able to purchase instruments for the district as well as band uniforms for the high school. In recent years, the group has added a coffee and butter braids sale, along with the popular Breakfast with Santa.

"We get a list from the music teachers each year, letting us know what they need," said Deborah Martin, the organization's vice president of communications. "We also have music teachers who sit on our board."

According to Martin, the Music Buffs also help with the purchase of music, marching band formations and classroom supplies at the elementary level.

This is the first time that the Music Buffs have ventured into the sale of mattresses.

For "Snoozefest," Custom Fundraising Solutions will bring in 20 mattresses from name brand retailers, such as Simmons, Beautyrest, New Englander and more. Partnering with a variety of major manufacturers across the country, CFS offers an average savings of up to 50 percent off traditional retail pricing.

All of the beds are made to order, and offer the newest mattress technology available, such as better pressure relief and a more breathable mattress. There will be a variety of styles available at Snooze Fest, including gel-infused memory foam, latex, orthopedic, and pocketed coil systems.

Music students have the opportunity to make money for their trip accounts by passing out forms at the Corn Boil for the event, which takes place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22. Just bring the form to Snoozefest. The public can also go to the Batavia Music Buffs website, www.bataviamusicbuffs.org, and fill out a form to credit a deserving student.

Corn Boil: Friday, Aug. 21, is the kickoff for Batavia High School fall athletics and Marching Band season. The Corn Boil, which takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, is a community event where families can enjoy a meal of brats and corn, purchase spirit wear and support all District 101 athletes.

Visitors can watch performances by the BHS marching band, cheer teams and dance teams. Various sports practices also will take place during the event in Bulldog Stadium. This is a community event for all ages.

Each meal includes a hot dog or brat, ear of corn, chips, water or soda. Pricing is $7 for adults, $6 for students, $4 for seniors age 65 and older, and $25 for a family of four with $5 for each additional family member.

At 7:30 p.m., student athletes involved in fall season BHS sports and their parents are invited to attend an informational meeting in the BHS gymnasium hosted by Dave Andrews, Batavia High School's assistant principal for operations and athletic director.
