Schaumburg-based housing assistance program turns 25

Schaumburg-based North West Housing Partnership is celebrating a milestone - 25 years assisting thousands of individuals to obtain and improve their housing in Cook, DuPage, McHenry and Kane counties.

The organization was founded in 1990, and initially focused on housing for senior citizens with low to moderate incomes. It has since grown to become a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved Housing Counseling Agency, offering home repair and handyman services and rehabbing/selling formerly foreclosed properties to revive neighborhoods. Its programs open homeownership opportunities to individuals with low to moderate incomes.

"I am one of a dedicated group of civic leaders who founded the North West Housing Partnership 25 years ago," said Kathy Gilmer, board vice president and founding board member. "Bringing together private and public resources, we have increased affordable housing by building apartments for seniors, repairing single-family homes, providing counseling for homebuyers and rehabbing foreclosed properties."

Board Chair Marc Neuerman said that the agency "continues to serve the affordable housing needs of area residents while maintaining responsible fiscal budgets and policies."

One of the services offered is down payment and closing cost assistance made possible through participation in HUD approved workshops that provide a required certificate. Assistance up to $10,000 is provided to individuals who purchase properties that are rehabilitated and sold by the agency.

"It is so rewarding to sit across from a first-time homebuyer purchasing one of our rehabbed homes, who is credit worthy, yet only earns 80 percent of the area median income," said Robyn Sandys, the agency's executive director. "These are hardworking people who want to be a part of the American dream of homeownership."

Workshops to assist homebuyers are held on a monthly basis at the agency, 1701 E. Woodfield Road, Suite 203, in Schaumburg. More information about the agency's programs and service areas is at www.NWHP.net, or (847) 969-0561.
