Arboretum invites dogs, owners to 'Tails on Trails'

Four-legged friends and their owners are invited to roam Morton Arboretum's 16 miles of woods, prairies and other natural landscapes during the Tails on the Trails event.

Tails on the Trails on Saturday, Sept. 12, will feature dog-friendly activities, including agility demonstrations and guided hikes through the grounds, 4100 Route 53, Lisle. Additionally, a pet expo will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Meadow Lake, rain or shine.

The day's activities will include:

• Demonstrations on pet health and fitness, obedience, and agility;

• Games for canines and their companions, including the popular peanut butter licking contest;

• Guided hikes offered throughout the day;

• Dog products and services for sale at the pet expo; and

• The opportunity to meet dogs available for adoption and learn more about volunteering with animal shelters.

"Tails on the Trails is very popular with our visitors because it's an opportunity for the whole family to come out and explore the arboretum and take part in the many fun events we have in store," said Gina Steele, special events coordinator. "This event allows people to not only have fun with their pets, but also learn how to better care for them."

The cost is $5 per dog, with regular admission fees for owners. A portion of the proceeds goes to local animal shelters. Each dog will receive an arboretum bandanna with paid admission. Regular nonmember admission rates for owners are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors 65 and older, $9 for ages 2 to 17, and free for younger children and members.

Dogs must be current with vaccinations, be social with other animals, and on a leash at all times while on the arboretum property. Dogs will not be allowed inside buildings, the Children's Garden or the Maze Garden.
