Cat dies in Algonquin house fire

A cat died in an Algonquin house fire that caused about $100,000 in damage Thursday, fire officials said.

Shortly after 7 a.m., Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District firefighters arrived at 1370 Menoma Trail to find smoke throughout the one-story, single-family home.

Firefighters located the fire, which was contained in the bedroom, said Cpt. Bill Hough.

Nobody was injured, and neighbors helped the family dog escape, fire officials said. The residents were not home at the time of the fire.

After the fire was extinguished, fire crews ventilated the home, which had significant smoke damage, Hough said.

The neighbor who called 911 told dispatchers the fire started from a malfunctioning air conditioning unit, he said.

The fire protection district is investigating the cause of the fire, Hough said. No foul play is suspected.

Assisting were the Carpentersville, Crystal Lake, Cary and Fox River Grove fire departments, and the Huntley and East Dundee fire protection districts. The Kane County sheriff's department also assisted.
