Schaumburg High alumna lauded for military service

District 211 has a tradition to honor alumni for the service they have given to their country.

Private First Class Krystal Vezzetti, a 2014 graduate of Schaumburg High School, was honored and thanked for her service by the board of education at its July 16 meeting. Vezzetti, the ninth alumnus to be recognized for her service, started the meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

Vezzetti joined the National Guard following high school graduation and left for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in August 2014. She completed her Military Occupation Specialty training at Fort Leonard Wood and graduated in January 2015 as a military police officer.

In August, she is going on a volunteer mission to Germany to patrol a military base for three weeks.

"You go through everything with the people that you meet at basic training," Vezzetti said. "You all are struggling through the same things, missing home, and you get to do things that people who don't join the military never will get to do. It is definitely a hard experience, but the benefits, the experience and the people that you meet make it well worth it. I wouldn't trade it for anything."

Vezzeti said she was interested in joining the military because she was interested in becoming a police officer. After various experiences in her life, she realized she wants to work toward becoming a therapist and hopes to attend University of Illinois-Chicago in the fall to study psychology.
