Lake Zurich man sent to prison for power tool theft

A Lake Zurich man with multiple retail theft convictions pleaded guilty to stealing power tools from a Mount Prospect Home Depot store.

Ian Ramirez, 31, was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo also ordered Ramirez to pay $704 in fines.

Ramirez left the store on July 21 without paying for the tools, worth about $1,360. He was detained by a Home Depot loss prevention officer after a brief struggle, prosecutors said.

During Ramirez's bond hearing, prosecutors recounted four theft convictions dating to 2006 for which he received sentences ranging from 18 months of probation to three years in prison.

Ramirez, who received credit for 23 days in custody, must complete at least 50 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
