I shot a series of pictures at the Butterfly House at Peck Farm Park in Geneva a couple of weeks ago of Hailey Kornak, 8, of Glen Ellyn as she tried to get a selfie when a Great Southern White butterfly landed on her. The picture that ran in the paper next day included her camera for context. It was fine, but I later realized how much impact I lost by cropping so loosely when the real picture was the expression on her face. Fortunately this column allows me a chance for a do-over. I picked a different frame in the series and cropped in tight on her face and the butterfly, just boiling the composition down to the basic elements and I think it gave it a lot more impact. So remember today's lesson...shoot tight, crop tight. PERSPECTIVE is a weekly photo column by the Daily Herald's photo staff. To comment, please contact Rick West, rwest@dailyherald.com.
