Des Plaines to remove 2,500 cubic yards of illegal fill

Des Plaines has hired a contractor to remove some 2,500 cubic yards of illegal fill from a private industrial site on the north side of town.

The city won a judgment in Cook County circuit court to remove the waste from 875 Seegers Road. The fill had been dumped in a floodplain over time in violation of city code, city officials said.

It's expected to cost between $130,000 and $300,000 to remove the fill and dispose of it at an appropriate landfill. The city is using reserve funds, though officials plan to record a lien against the property to recover those costs.
